This week I leave for Cleveland to teach a Dynamic Communicators Workshop. I have a passion for simple, crystal clear communication that has the power to transform.
Over the course of the three day event we introduce a powerful recipe that turns any passion/idea into an amazingly compelling piece of communication. Then every night we ask each of the members in our small groups to give a five minute speech. Each speech is video recorded and given real time feedback and critique.
Every year someone asks me why we limit the talks to only five minutes. My standard response to that inquiry is, "if you can't say it in five minutes, you can't say it in fifty." Crystal clarity is the key to great communication. Getting there though can be agonizing.
Here are examples of two interesting speech formats that are sweeping the globe. Ignite is limited to 5 minutes. Pecha Kucha is just over six minutes. Daniel Pink sums up the essence of Pecha Kucha in the title of his Wired article on the subject: "Pecha Kucha: Get to the PowerPoint in 20 Slides Then Sit the Hell Down." Also notice the thought and creativity that has gone into slide design
